Dan was born on November 6, 1950 in Little Chute, Wisconsin, a small town just south of Green Bay, and graduated with a degree in Architectural/Construction Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering. Dan started at Derse Exhibits in 1974 as an estimator, moved up to General Manager of the Milwaukee Exhibit Division, was promoted to Vice President, then to Executive Vice President of the Corporation, and topped off his career as Chief Operating Officer. For Sixteen years Dan was one of three owners of Derse Exhibits. Dan was actively involved in many professional exhibit industry organizations and affiliations during his years with Derse. As a member of EDPA, Dan served as president of the Chicago Chapter, 1982-84, served on the National Board of Directors, 1985-87, and was a member of the Independent Business Associations of Wisconsin in 1986. In addition to his very busy exhibit focus, Dan returned much to his community. He served as an EMT for his local fire department for eight years. Over a fifteen-year period, he volunteered for many church functions including CCD instruction, Eucharistic Minister, and worked at many fund-raising events. Dan was married for thirty-two years to Sheila and was the proud father of Ben, Adam, and Laura. He is remembered by his family as being a strong role model, mentor and friend. His smile and laugh would warm a room. His conviction to things that mattered was unmatched. On the business side, what was important to Dan was seeing others succeed and to see their efforts translate into the company’s strength and positive performance. It was said of Dan that “he possessed an innate intelligence and strong organizational ability. His construction experience, coolness under pressure, and ability to relate well with his workers and peers made Dan a most valuable asset.” Dan’s partners, Bill Haney and Bill McNamara, will miss his leadership and dedication. Together the three “amigos” helped build, direct and guide Derse to an exhibit industry leader. Besides his wife Sheila and children, Dan is survived by brothers Jim and Lee, sisters Becky and Diane, and four Godchildren, Jill, Abby, April, and Ryan. The VanderSanden family has requested that donations be made to the Kidney Cancer Association, Suite 203, 1234 Sherman Avenue, Evanston, IL 60202-1375, FBO Daniel VanderSanden. |
